IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT THROUGH CONTEXTUAL GUESSING TECHNIQUE AT SEVENTH GRADE OF SMPN 4 BANJIT WAY KANAN IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018



The design of this research was classroom action research (CAR). This research
was applied collaborative action research, this research was done in two cycle. It
is done with; planning, acting, observation and reflecting. In collecting data, the
writer uses; test,observation and questionnaire. Each cycle consist of two
meetings. The subject of this research was 33 students at seventh grade of SMPN
4 Banjit Way Kanan. The result of the research showed that the application of
contextual guessing technique can improve the students reading ability in
descriptive text. In cycle 1, The number of success students has reached 12 of 20
students. It means that 12 (60%) students already passed the test, and only 8
(40%) of them were failed. In cycle 2, The number of success students has
reached 12 of 20 students. It means that 17 (85%) students already passed the
test, and only 3 (15%) of them were failed. The researcher concludes that the
minimum target of success, that is 80% of the students in a class, has been
achieved in cycle 2, and it proves that the application of contextual guessing
technique can positively improve the students‟ reading ability in descriptive text
through contextual guessing technique at the seventh grade of SMPN 4 Banjit
Way Kanan in academic year 2017/2018.
In conclusion, contextual guessing technique can improve students‟ reading
ability in descriptive text. In relation to the result of the reserach, some suggestion
are offered to english teacher, please use contextual guessing technique in
teaching learning contextual guessing technique to improve students‟ reading
ability effectively. According to the tabulation result of the questionnaire that was
given to the students, it indicated that application of contextual guessing technique
in teaching learning written descriptie text was appropriately applied. It was
helpful for the students to find related ideas and develop the chosen topic
sentences from the main topic to be a descriptive text. Contextual guessing
technique was something new for the students, so they were motivated to use this
method and they were encouraged to learn more about reading descriptive text
